MD PnP: Getting connected for patient safety (TM)

Medical Device "Plug-and-Play" Interoperability Program

The MD PnP program is leading the adoption
of open
standards and technology to interconnect

We had a Scientific Exhibit entitled "Medical Device Plug-and-Play Connectivity" at the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists in Chicago October 15-17, 2006.

The exhibit  featured safety improvements that are achievable through medical device interoperability. We  demonstrated one of the clinical scenarios (or “use cases”) collected at the STA 2005  meeting session on interoperability: The connection of a portable x-ray machine and anesthesia ventilator to synchronize the x-ray exposure with the desired phase of respiration. In our demo, a simulated x-ray will trigger a camera to capture an image of a mechanical lung at the desired phase of respiration. You can download the exhibit handout here.

Posters  led participants through the process of turning clinical scenarios into technical solutions, and reviewed the history of medical device interoperability. (download links for posters are listed below) Over 300 conference attendees visited our exhibit in 2.5 days.

In addition to the scientific exhibit, there was a special session on medical device interoperability. Read the story in the January 2007 issue of Anesthesiology News.

The ASA Scientific Exhibit included a demonstration of the safety improvements that are possible when a portable x-ray machine and anesthesia  ventilator can interoperate to synchronize the x-ray exposure with patient's breathing.
